Burks Chapel A.M.E. Church, founded around 1858 by Rev. Moses Burks, has stood as a cornerstone of faith, education, and community service in Paducah, Kentucky for over 165 years. What began as a humble prayer meeting in the home of Dinah Jarrett grew into a thriving congregation that built its first frame “gun barrel” church on the same site where the current sanctuary stands. Throughout its history, Burks Chapel has been a shelter in times of hardship, from housing students during the post-emancipation years when no schools for African American children existed, to serving as a refuge during the great floods of 1884, 1913, and 1937. The church has continually expanded and improved its facilities through the dedication of its pastors, members, and community, with each generation contributing to its growth and spiritual vitality.

From camp meetings under oak trees to hosting major conferences of the A.M.E. Church, Burks Chapel has remained a place where faith meets action. Its ministries have included vibrant choirs, youth programs, Bible studies, and outreach initiatives that embody its mission as “The Church in the Heart of the Community, to Make a Difference in the Lives of People.” Today, under the leadership of Rev. Donna Lorhorn, the congregation continues to flourish, blending tradition with new expressions of worship. With a rich heritage and a forward-looking vision, Burks Chapel remains committed to serving God and the Paducah community for generations to come.
